Topic: feedback ?

On our site: www.warcom.com.au

I'm more so looking for suggestions on how to layout the flypages and browse pages...

This site has been in the works for around three years now (our backend is massive!)

Any feedback would be tops : )

Re: feedback ?

hi warcom,
i like your site. it

Re: feedback ?

Hi

Personally I like the mono-tone look smile  but maybe I'm just a boring old sod!

I'm not in favour of anything that blinks or flashes for that matter.

Have you tried a different background colour? Or a feint drop shadow on the tables?

Good point about using gifs for table headings though, but again I would stick with something black/white/grey ish...

Maybe some of the text could do with "livening up" a bit, some of the longer bits look a bit daunting. Something like [css] .dropcontent:first-letter{font-size:150%; font-weight : 500;} on new paragraphs for example.

I use 1024 x 768 resolution just about all of the time and your site fills that very well. However at lower resolutions the "s_header" remains at a fixed width whilst the rest of the site is liquid. [But I'm sure you knew that anyway]. Presumably the horizontal nav bar is to blame.

Someone pointed me to this useful tool recently, now I wouldn't be without it! http://www.nils.org.au/ais/web/resources/toolbar/

Browse/flypages look fine too, but again may benefit from some sort of text "enhancement".

Overall the site looks very good though. Can't fing a "green with envy" smilie so I'll just use this one  B)

Best

Re: feedback ?

I read the following quote recently (don't remember who said it - some usability guru):

A website is not a picture, it's a sales tool

I totally agree!

I think your site also reflects that philosophy. It is easy to use, logical in it's presentation and projects a professional business image.

I wouldn't bother with changing the titles to images. I wouldn't add any more images at all. Doing so will not make you any extra sales (making sales is your goal, right?). It will only add to the page load time for customers on slow dial-up connections.

Suggestion: Poll your customers and ask them about their experience shopping at your online store. Then ask them how that experience could be improved.

You'll hopefully achive two things:
1) You'll show that you have an interest in making things better for them, thus building the relationship.
2) You'll find out what really needs changing on your store, thus improving the likelihood of further sales (if you make the changes)

Good luck!

but it think too that it

Re: feedback ?

overall flow and look of site is very nice

my suggestions...

the news area - i might suggest doing this with the position lower on the page - or maybe consider using an embedded browse page to display small tnail and short description of news event...

i have always thought the "specials" or feature of the day should be first and foremost on the site --

in your "Affiliate Sites" are you utilizing any sort of admin side link exchange management ?? - more and more i am seeing the great importance of links inbound for better se returns...

also i would consider putting your search box up on top - maybe next to view cart or above the rs or ls menues...

on your browse page, you are offering to sell things from browsepage -  maybe in your product name / link to flypage  include a note like "Product Details"

in the flypage - an expando view would be nice to inflate image - later today - i will post mine in mods section...

in the flypage description you mention If you buy 5 or more you can have them for $25 each! but upon checkout - add to cart there is no discount given - i would not put a discount note in unless you can show the discount upon add to cart /update cart

- maybe consider using a note "call for quantity discounts" or "Do you need lots of these items? - Sign up for Dealer Pricing" have these customers fill out  a "dealer access application for reduced pricing..."  then move these many item buying cliients into another shopper group adding dealer "discounted" prices -

in your cart - since folks may be shopping for many items, ram sticks etc... make update work on one submit for all items in cart - updating one at a time, for many quantity changes at "oredr review - checkout" will drive customers away

in your checkout you tell "Shipping will be calculated manually" i would not show this unless i could have client input delivery postal code and show them actual cost - rather i would show prices FOB "Your Location" and maybe a link to a "shipping cost estimator" page and a note saying shipping will be added at checkout...

on your clearence items "Clearance Items!" i see an immediate shortfall, one that has stumped me for years - in an attempt to catch that quick add on sale we need to be able to ORDER multiple items at ONCE from browse page - i have found folks will not keep clicking from browse page to product page submit to cart then arrow back to "Clearance Items!" a hopeless waste of time

We need to come up with a way to add multiple items upon form submit for this type of "Clearance Items", "add on"  or "upsell" page...

also with the complex nature of your product offering i would not consider publishing this site without Sylvans recently viewed items add on as many people will loose track of things

your Send this page to a friend!, in my view is an important item - i would put this link on top bar with white css link next to "Product Details"

upon checkout, i am changing the path on my sites and you might consider doing something similar - ask if "have you shopped with us before?" (to help reduce multiple registrations) "yes" or  "no" form submit if yes pass to login - lost password page - if not pass to user sign up page - use easy easy sign up password /user generator - take some of the sign up work out of things Username Password Generator by Heiko

something i have done for years - on flypage top - show short menu (horizontal) showing path to current page IE:  "Home" >>> "Browse - DVD/DVD-RW" >>> "LG 4081 8x DVD-RW Drive"  to make it easy to retrace steps and return to category browse page...

showing an "order status" link on logged in user would be a benefit..

just my thoughts --- now back to work for me!

Re: feedback ?

topshopper and erv both make valid assumptions, but they are still assumptions.

Much better to get feedback from actual users.

See, we think others like sites designed a certain way because WE like sites designed a certain way.

In his book "Don't Make Me Think" (excellent book, by the way), Steve Krug explains how to deal with "religious" debates....

It's not productive to ask questions like "Do most people like pulldown menus?" The right kind of question is "Does this pulldown, with these items and this wording in this context on this page create a good experience for most people who are likely to use this site?"

The only way to answer that question is by testing. Get people who have not used your site, but fit the profile of your customers, to test it and give feedback.

Re: feedback ?

The main reason the site has little or no graphics is because it pulls in a couple of hundred thousands hits per month, (bandwidth is very very expensive in australia!) so we keep the site mostly text to cut down on that..

Though we are redesigning...: http://warcom.com.au/redev/

The site currently moves around $100,000AU worth of stock per month, so it's proving to pay off well.

It's probably worth me showing the backend also, but at the risk of having a major security problem I'll hold back for the moment..

The rest of awesome and I'll definetely be considering using several of them!

Just off topic: Has anyone made an RMA mod ? (for those who know much about pc gear would probably know what an RMA is..) If not would someone be willing to write one for me (paid)? I don't have the time at the moment, and I really need it done.

Or perhaps we could all work together to make one?

Cheers, Paul

Re: feedback ?

Hi,

I like your site, it seems quite nice.  I definitely like the small amount of images on the site.  Especially good for a computer hardware shop.

May I suggest you enable mod_gzip.  Would make your text heavy pages load considerably faster, as well as save you a little bandwidth.  http://www.schroepl.net/projekte/mod_gzip/

What did you change to make your site usable in Australia?  I would be really interested in those changes, as I am in the middle of making a shop for my father(for his sandpaper shop).

Perhaps we can share any Australia specific enhancements we make.

Cheers.
